Koh Samui Insight
Koh Samui is the third largest island in Thailand – only Phuket and Koh Chang are bigger – and is part of an Archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand. More than 80 islands surround Koh Samui, with Koh Phangan being the second largest and Koh Tao the third largest in the region. Nearby Angthong Nationalpark consists of 42 tiny islands and is a fun day trip to explore.

About 1500 years ago, the first settlers arrived on Samui, and for centuries they relied on their fishing craft and coconut plantations. Nowadays, tourism is the most important industry on the island, but even today, it`s easy to see why Samui is considered the island of coconuts. Until the early 1970s, there weren`t any major roads, and the journey from one side of the island to the other could take hours on dirt tracks through the jungle. Today it only takes about 90 minutes to drive one full circle around the island on the 52-kilometre-long ring road.
By plane
Flying is the most convenient option of visiting the island.
A one-hour flight from Bangkok, Koh Samui Airport (USM) is one of the most beautiful airports in the world, with its open structures and gardens. Bangkok Airways owns the airport and offers direct flights to Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and internationally to Singapore and Hong Kong.

By boat
Visitors arriving from the neighbouring islands and the mainland take the ferry. Seatran and Raja Ferry operate car ferries almost every hour between the Donsak on the mainland and Nathon on the island. Lomprayah and Seatran connect Koh Samui to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
